Bill Munster

We are so excited that you will be making a replica of our Bill Munster! We hope that he inspires your classroom as much as he has ours!

Materials:

Black, red, green, yellow, and orange butcher paper

Red, cream/white, blue, brown, and orange construction paper

Glue-white Elmer’s and hot glue

16 oz. foam cups

3 oz. plastic cups

Black marker

Black and green yarn

Medium foam plates

Scissors

Head

1.First, take four adult size shoeboxes and put them together with glue by stacking two on the left and two on the right making a square prism. Next, wrap your square prism with black butcher paper like a present.

2.Hair: Fold a piece of blue construction paper hot dog style and cut small triangles out at one of the ends to make spiked hair. Take black yarn and cut into 1 inch pieces and glue to the back of blue construction paper as hair. Line the folded middle up with the front top edge of the prism, so that the spiked hair is sticking up and you can glue the other flap to the box.

3.Ears: First, take two brown pieces of construction paper and cut two large triangles for ears. Glue one brown triangle to the top left side of the prism so that the point is sticking up. Repeat this step for the right side.

4.Face:   Using red construction paper cut a set of BIG RED LIPS out for the face. (The lips will cover most of the monster’s face.) Glue the lips at the bottom of the prism where BIG RED LIPS would normally go! Next, take orange construction paper and cut out two medium size circles for the eyes. Glue one orange circle to the front top right corner of the cube. Then glue the other orange circle to the front top left corner of the cube. For the 3-D eyes, you will glue three 3 ounce white plastic cups on each orange circle. Before you glue the cups down color the bottom middle circle with a black marker and draw veins on the sides of the cups. For the left eye, glue the open ends of the cups down in a triangular pattern. For the right eye, glue the open ends of cups down in an upside down triangular pattern. Place a curved piece of white paper in the middle of the orange circles to serve as a nose piece for glasses. For the nose, cover one 3 ounces cup with red construction paper. Glue the nose between the eyes open side down.

Neck, body, and arms:

Neck: Cover one small shoebox with black butcher paper like a present. On the front of the neck, you need to glue small red triangles point side down in a row as a spike necklace.

Body: Glue together six adult size shoeboxes to make a large prism about 25 inches tall and 25 inches wide. Cover body with black butcher paper.

Nametag: Next take a piece of white construction paper and cut a rectangle that is 12 inches tall and 4 inches wide for a nametag. On the top center write in small letters “My name is” and under that in large letters write “Bill.”

Necktie: Bill also is wearing an orange tie with black stripes. Bill’s tie is about 9 inches long from top to bottom and comes to a point at the end.

Stitches: Our poor Bill also had a little run in with his cat, Tiny, this morning. (Note that TINY isn’t so tiny!) So, he had to stitch up his shirt with brown thread. About 3 inches from the bottom of his left side, he has brown stitches made from brown construction paper about 8 inches long going up diagonally.

Shirt pocket: At the bottom left hand side of Bill’s shirt is a small red pocket with a white piece of paper stuck out of it. Cut the red pocket out of red construction paper like a square house with a pointed roof. The pocket is about 3 ½ inches tall and 2 inches wide. Turn the red house upside down and glue at the bottom left corner of Bill’s shirt leaving the top of the pocket open. At the opening of the pocket, place an one inch by 2 inch piece of white construction in it so that it looks like a note is sticking out.

Arms:   Take two 16 oz. foam drinking cups and glue both open ends together. Cover the cups with green butcher paper. Next, cut out twenty 3 in. X 3 in. (about) square pieces of yellow butcher paper. Wad each yellow square into a ball. Then glue 10 balls on each green arm.   Glue one arm on each side of the body at the top front corner.

Hands: Take the medium Styrofoam plates and cover with yellow butcher paper. Next, cut out 40 3 in. X 3 in. (about) square pieces of green butcher paper. Wad each green square into a ball. Then glue 20 balls on around the outside edges of each plate. Put glue on the end of the arms and attach hand in the middle. You will have to hold it in place until it dries. (We used both white and hot glue that was barely hot!)

Legs & Feet

1.Legs: Take 2 16 oz. foam drinking cups and glue both open ends together. Next, glue another 16 oz. cup to the small end of the ones just combined. You will have three cups in all glued together for each leg. Repeat the same steps for the other leg. After the two legs are finished, it’s time to give them some color. Starting at the closed end begin gluing 1 inch strips of red and orange construction paper around the cups alternating red and orange. Repeat this until both legs are covered with red and orange stripes. Finally, slide the legs under the big body sitting on a student chair.

2.Feet: For the left foot cover an adult shoebox with orange butcher paper like a present. Next, cut lots of green yarn into 2 to 3 inch pieces and glue on top of box for HAIRY MONSTER FOOT! Follow the same steps for the right foot but cover with red butcher paper. Finally, place the boxes in front of each leg.

Putting Bill together:

1.Place Bill’s big body on a student chair.

2.Put Bill’s neck in the middle of Bill’s body at the top.

3.Third, place Bill’s head on top of his neck.

4.Next, put Bill’s legs under his body. Place one under each front corner.

5.Finally, place Bill’s feet in front of each leg.

We hope that you enjoy Bill in your classroom!
