Classroom A: Jeanne Ferren  (Walnut Springs, TX)

We started with two 7'X 4' pieces of white butcher paper.  We taped the paper together with wide clear strapping tape lengthwise to create a 7'X8' piece. The children cut around the edges of the paper to make it look bumpy and scalloped.  Then we blew up a large white balloon and put it right in the center of the paper.   We punched a hole in the paper and through the tape right in the center of the two pieces where we had taped it, and pushed the knotted end of the balloon through the hole in the paper.  We wrapped the paper around the balloon to make it drape over the balloon to look like a ghost.  One of the children cut out eyes and a mouth of black construction paper.  We glued these to the front of the paper over the balloon head.  The eyes were  round and about 1 and 1/2 inches across and the mouth is an oval about 4 inches long.  The children then wrote something they have learned in 1st grade on 3"X5" index cards, cut orange construction paper for a small frame around each card.  Mrs. Ferren made a sign that said "Floating into First Grade" in orange and black ink and put the sign on orange paper and then on black paper.  The sign was placed on the front of our ghost with the children's cards all around the sign.  We hung our ghost in our classroom on a zip line of fishing line. The ghost is taped and connected to a straw through which the fishing line was strung.  Now, it really does float all across the classroom.

Classroom B: Joanna DiNello (Miami Elementary, Chippewa, M)

We worked in groups and each group made a body part. We decided to name our Monster Mr. Monster. Below is what each group did.

For the Body:
This group started with the shoe box and they wrapped it up like a present with the green butcher paper using tape to hold it together. Then they cut out three strips of blue construction paper (about 2 inches wide and the width of the box) and glued it on top of the green box spreading the stripes out evenly on top of the box and gluing them down. Then they cut the bottoms of 3 purple cups off (so there’s just the circle bottom left) and taped it in the center of the 3 blue strips on the green box.  Then they took a piece of green yarn and glued it in an oval pattern around all three of the buttons. Then they glued two short little green yarn pieces in between each button. Afterwards, they taped the red construction paper piece (un-cut) to the back of the fully assembled green box for the monsters back. Next, they cut two little pieces of black construction paper and glued them on top of each other, without sealing the top to make a small pocket. They glued the pocket onto the back right side of the box. Then they cut a small strip of red construction paper and Mrs. DiNello wrote the name: Mr. Monster on it, so he could have his name in his pocket. Then they put the piece with his name on it in his pocket, with some of it left sticking out. Then using scissors to push through both sides of the box they made arm holes. They went down about 2 inches from the top on both sides and made the hole big enough to stick something through. They stuck the scissors in the side and twisted them for this.
For the Arms:
This group twisted 2 pieces of red construction paper making them thin and long. They pushed a hole through the bottom of two green cups and then they slipped the construction paper through the cups so that a little of it stuck out the bottom. Then they glued a bunch of short little strips of green yarn on top of the cups (for tentacles). Then they stuck the other end of the twisted construction arms through the holes in the body to attach them.
For the Legs:
This group twisted two pieces of green construction paper up (like the arms) and cut holes in the bottoms of two purple cups. Then they slipped the cups through the construction paper just like the arms and they cut four little thin red stripes from construction paper and glued two on the front of each cup. Then they cut one little thin green stripe and glued it onto the left foot and cut the same size piece in brown construction paper and glued it onto the right foot above the red stripes. Then they cut two long and thin stripes from the red and yellow construction papers and glued one to each of the bottom ends of the cups (like tentacles). They glued the green next to the red on the left foot and the yellow next to the red on the right foot. Then they glued each assembled leg to the bottom of the body by gluing the construction paper leg to the bottom of the box (with some tape to reinforce the hold too). They glued one on the bottom right and one on the bottom left.

For the head:

Take the silver balloon and blow it up all the way. Tape three green cups to the front (near the top) for the eyes. Cut an orange mouth and yellow teeth and tape them under the cups onto the balloon for the mouth. Then cut the paper plate into three large (equal) pieces and color three stripes on two of the pieces with crayons. The top stripe is yellow, the middle stripe is green, and the bottom is red. Then on the third piece glue blue yarn and let it hang down for hair. Glue the two colored pieces on the side for ears and the hair plate on the back side of the balloon to show the hair.

Then Mrs. DiNello helped by putting the head and body together. She carefully glued and taped (for reinforcement) the head to the top of the body and she used the remaining purple cup to help prop the head up behind the balloon by gluing the balloon to the cup and taping the cup to the top of the box. (The head is kind of heavy!)

AND THAT’S HOW WE MADE MR. MONSTER!!!
