Classroom A: Sheryl Huffman (McGregor, TX)

Supplies:  ball/balloon, copy paper size box, construction paper (red, yellow, green, blue, brown, orange, pink), bulletin board paper (red, green, black),  wiggley eyes, white tissue paper if using a ball, tape, glue, scissors, pencil

For the head:  Blow up a balloon the size of a soccer ball or use a soccer size ball and cover it with tissue paper.

To the "head" add yellow rectangle ears- 1 on each side; a pink heart nose in the middle; a green happy face smile; blue squares with wiggly eyes in the middle of the blue square for eyes; and curly green construction paper hair.

For the body:  Use black bulletin board paper to cover a box (size of a copy paper box); add brown, orange, red, yellow and blue circles of various sizes to the box for polka dots.

For the arms:  Use red bulletin board paper to make arms that are 16 inches long attached on the side of the box with 6 fingers on each arm.

For the legs:  Use green bulletin board paper to make the legs that are 12 inches long with 2 toes that are similiar to pig feet (hooves).  The legs hang down in front of the box when the box is sitting on the edge of a table.

Attach the head to the top of the box!

Have fun and we are looking forward to seeing you on Halloween!

Monster’s name- Scary Hairy

Monster directions:

Supplies: one women’s size 9 shoebox, 10 twenty ounce Styrofoam cups, orange yarn, construction paper in all colors 12 inch by 9 inch cut in strips of inch by 12 inch, one white 9inch paper plate, 3 white six inch paper plates. Brown butcher paper.

Feet and legs- take five plain white 20 ounce styrofoam cups and stacked them inside each other to make a leg. Glue two green triangles (2 inch tall by 1 and a half inch long) with point up on the bottom cup of each leg. Set the legs aside and glue them on after the body, arms, and head have been assembled. Place all this on legs that have glue on the top cup of each.

Body- We used a lady’s size nine shoe box.. We set it up vertically. We used strips of yellow, light blue, blue, green, light green, red, orange, purple, and pink construction paper, 1"wide by 12" long, folded accordion style (1"folds) to cover the box. We started at the bottom of the box with lines of glue horizontally across the box every inch moving up until seven inches of the box was covered in these strips. After placing the arms and the head on the box, we covered the rest of the box. It took a lot of strips and glue to make it appear "hairy".

Arms -we took a sheet of brown butcher paper 2’ 6" long by 1’ 6’ wide and made a tube.

We rolled the paper very tight starting at the bottom corner and rolling diagonally. We pulled it tight to measure, 2 feet. Then we cut it in half and glued the edge to make the tube secure. We glued a 1" orange strip of paper around each tube an inch from the end to prevent it from possibly coming undone. At the other end of each tube we made a cut an inch down on each side of the tube. We bent the cut paper to make tabs to glue on the box for the arms. We left the arms dry over lunch and recess. The arms will stick out from the body.

Hands-At the end of the tubes with the orange bands strips we glued a hand. We used a 6" paper plate that we cut into fourths. We used two of these fourth for our hands. We cut into the rounded side making four small triangular shapes (fingers) on the plate for the hand. We glued the pointed edge into the end of the tube.

Head- We glued a 9 inch regular size white paper plate on the front of the box just above the strips of paper ( the seven inch measurement) so the plate would be secure to hold the features of the face. We used two 6" paper plate for the eyes. We made a cut 1 and a half inches long into the plate. We did this to divide the plate into fourths so we could fold the edges to make a three dimensional eye. We folded the cut portion to the center. We glued a 2" purple circle in the center of each eye. We then added a 1" black circle onto the purple circle. We cut the upper fold of the plate to make it appear to have lashes. We glued these plates on the large two inches from the top. We added a black nose between the eyes. It was a six inch long pear shaped paper that we cut the bottom into three rounded parts. We folded it in half so it would stick out. We made a red crescent mouth- four inches long and 1 inch tall. We put two pointed yellow teeth a half inch from each corner of the mouth. We used bright orange yarn to make its hair. We made the hair by making fifty lengths 7inches long and tying them tightly in the middle (like a pom-pom) with a piece of the yarn. We glued this in the middle of the top of the plate and let the hair fall over the face. We made a green six inch tall and wide heart. We cut it in half and made ears on each side of the paper plate.

Have fun. Our class enjoyed his creation!!!  See you at the show!
