MONSTER FROM MORTON ELEMENTARY

  • Take a paper plate and color the whole front side with a blue marker.
  • Use two 100-ml.-paper cups and color the outsides with a yellow marker and make round black pupils on the bottoms.  Use Elmer’s Glue and put it around the rim of the opening on each cup.  Stick them on the paper plate next to each other a little above the center.
  • To make the nose, cut a rectangle out of red construction paper about 1 ½ inch by 5 inches.  Make a “hamburger” fold in the middle and open it back up.  Then fold each bottom corner up to the top of the centerline to form a triangle on each side.  Over lap the triangles and glue together.  Then put glue on the bottom of that and stick the pointed edge near the bottom of the cups.  The nose should form a triangle that sticks out with the opening on the bottom.
  • For his mouth, cut a piece of red yarn 11 centimeters long and glue it in a circle below his nose.  Then cut 2 more pieces of the red yarn 2 centimeters each and glue one against the inside of the top of the circle.  Next glue the other one underneath the 1st small piece.
  • The ears are cut from yellow construction paper.  They are about the size of a tracing of a thumb.  The ears are glued on so that they are curved on the outside and straight on the paper plate.
  • The last part of the head is the hair.  Cut 3 pieces of red construction paper in about 1 inch strips 12 inches long.  Repeat with green construction paper.  Then accordion fold the strips.  Put a little glue on one end and attach it the top of the paper plate in an alternating pattern starting with red on the left side and then the next one about 1 inch away.  Then glue the other side of each strip so it glues on the back of the paper plate matching the front.

  • Take a shoebox and cover it like a present with black bulletin board paper.  Have it long-way up.
  • Use yellow construction paper and cut a rectangle that is 5 inches by 6 inches.  Fold the rectangle like a “hot dog”.  Cut the side that is opposite of the fold about ½ inch from the outside up until about 1 inch from the top, then take your scissors out and start about ½ inch from the fold and cut up on angle to meet the other cut.  Then cut out an angle from about the 1/3 of the way on the top on the folded side up to the top.  Trace a quarter six times on white construction paper.  Glue 3 above the M spaced out toward the left, middle, and right, and the other 3 circles on the same way below the M.
  • For the neck, take two 8 oz. Styrofoam cups and color the whole outside with an orange marker.  Then put glue around the rim of one and attach it to the rim of the other.  Next, put glue on the bottom of one of the cups and put it in the center of the box on the top.  Take a third Styrofoam cup that is left white and glue the head onto it with the opening at the top and on the bottom half of the paper plate.  When this is dried, put glue around the bottom and add this to the stacked orange cups.
  • The arms are cut out of green construction paper in two 2 inch by 12 inch strips.  We blew up two small blue water balloons and tied the ends to some pieces of yarn.  Then the yarn was glued to the bottom of each strip and the top is glued to the top of the box near to the neck coming off the sides.
  • To start the legs, blow up two purple, two green, and two blue water balloons as large as you can.  Then cut six 25 inch pieces of the red yarn and tie one end to each balloon.  Take a sheet of 12 x 18 construction paper of blue, green, and purple. Roll each one like a long tube and put glue down the edge to hold it together.  After it dries, put the two strings from the purple balloons down the purple tube and glue the yarn that hangs out onto the left bottom side of the box.  Do the same thing with the green tube and balloons and glue it in the middle.  The blue ones go on the right.  The legs will hang over so the monster can sit on a ledge.
