Classroom B: Karmen Brower (St. Joseph, MI)
Head Instructions:
We started with cutting 6 squares that were 12 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Then we got some cups, 1 6-ounce cup, 1 1-¼-ounce cup and 1 12-ounce cup. Next we put the 12-ounce and 6 ounce cups 3 cm. from the top and 1 inch from each side on the construction paper for the eyes. We then got the cup that was 1 ¼ ounce and made it colorful and taped it on the middle of the face for the nose. We then cut out one 4-inch equilateral triangle and 2 strips of one inch wide paper and folded them accordion style to make the tongue and the mouth. We put the tongue under the nose. Then we taped the sides together for the head. After that we put the ears on, which are one red (20 inch circumference) and one blue balloon (13 inch circumference.) Next cut a hole about 2 inches in diameter on the bottom of the head. Now put the hair on the monster. We used rainbow colored string for the hair. We then used a 20 ounce cup and used orange paper, light blue paper and blue paper and curled it and taped it to the top of the cup. We then taped this cup to the top of the head.
Body Instructions:
We started by taking 2 shoeboxes. The dimensions of these boxes are 11x6x4 inches. We took orange construction paper and put it around 3 sides of the box and tie them together with string. Next take 1 piece of blue construction paper and make holes in it. Tape it to the front sides, and top of body. Then we cut a red heart that is about 10 hundredth squares in area and put it on a folded up (accordion style) black piece of paper that is about 1 inch wide and put that on the monster. Afterward we put a hole in the top of the body with scissors and rolled up a paper plate. Stick this paper plate in the top of the hole, which will make a stick. Put the head on the stick, which will help to secure head to the body. We used tape to make sure it was attached.
Arm Instructions:
Start with 2 small 12-ounce cups. Get 2 sheets of red construction paper (12x18 inches.) Draw on the red paper the outline of an octopus tentacle and make it swerve. Next you will need two pieces of 26-inch long string and poke a hole in the bottom of the cups. Thread the string thru the cup. Cut out the 17-inch tentacles. Cut a small section of the 12x18 paper and wrap it around the 12-ounce cup. Take the 12 ounce cup roped with red paper and tape it to the back of the red tentacles. Take a 26-inch piece of string and put it through the 12-ounce cup. Do this again so you have 2 arms.
Connecting the Arms to the Body:
We attached the arms to the body by poking a hole 2/3 the way up the side. Then we put a hole 2/3 the way up the back and one centimeter in from the side and pulled the string through that side to pull up the arms or to let them dangle. Then we did that to the other side as well.
Legs/Feet:
We got 6 clear cups and 2 colored cups, which we then cut holes in the bottom of the clear cups. Then we drew blood veins in each clear cup. Next we stacked and taped the rims together with the colored cup on the bottom and 3 clear cups on top. The clear cups are 4 inches long. The colored cup is 5 inches long. We then used 2 8-ounce Styrofoam cups and cut them in half, latitude way. We cut the top of cup into a half circle. Tape these cups to colored cups as feet. Next we put each foot in a small shoebox and taped it well to the bottom of the box. You will need to fill this space with newspaper. Next put blue construction paper on top like a lid and tape to sides of box. Cut 2 36” pieces of string and tie around box in a bow, like a shoelace. Lastly, place the body with head on legs and find the balance point. Then tape legs to body with packing tape. Tape the 2 shoes together and continue taping until sturdy.
Good Luck!!!
