Oct. 29, 11:00 CST--

Classroom A: Courtney Prugh (Brookhaven, Killeen, TX)

Head: Blow up a balloon to a size larger than your head and tie. Glue strips of newspaper around the balloon until it is covered. Cut out the very bottom of two clear plastic cups (the flat bottom part). Glue those on the head for eyes.

Body: Take two shoeboxes. Glue the boxes on top of each other so that the long sides are glued together. Glue newspaper all over the boxes. Poke 4 holes in the boxes-2 on the top box and two on the bottom box. Each box's holes should be about a hand length apart. Connect the top hole and the bottom hole beneath it with an orange piece of yarn (stick each end through the holes.)

Legs: Glue together 1 1/2 shoeboxes for each leg so that the short sides are glued together. Blow up 10 balloons about the size of eggs. Poke 5 holes at the bottom of each box. Put a balloon in each hole for toes. Glue newspaper over the boxes. Cut two paper plates in half. Glue 1 half on the front of each leg, and glue three small pieces of paper plate on the outside of each leg. Cut off the bottoms of ten cups. Glue 5 cup bottoms on the front of each leg. Put one string of orange yarn on the side of each leg. The yarn should be equal to the height of the boxes.

Arms: Glue 5 16 ounce clear plastic cups together for each arm. They should be set inside of each other with about two inches sticking out of each. Wrap newspaper around the cups and glue. Blow up two balloons about the size of your head. Glue the balloons to the opening of the end cups for hands (the tied part of the balloon should be sitting inside of the cup). Cut 5 green triangles for each arm. Glue them on the side of the arms. Cut 10 more green triangles for fingers. Glue 5 on the end of each balloon.

Assembly: Put the two legs standing so they are nearly touching. Glue the body to the top of the legs (they don't match exactly. There will be part of each leg extending beyond the body) Glue one arm to each side of the body, nearly at the top (they should stick straight out). Turn the balloon head upside down so the wider part is on the bottom. Glue the head to the top of the body. You have now created our mummy!

Just FYI-hot glue works the best for the body parts! We used liquid glue on the balloon hands.

Classroom B: Janet Jennings (Meadows El, Fort Hood, TX)

Head:

Make a 6” X 6” head with several full sheets of newspaper.  We used 7 sheets.  Cover it with green construction paper.  The hair is made with yellow, brown, red, white, and orange yarn.  Cut yarn to 18 inches long.  Glue to the top of the head. Cut 1 inch off the bottom of two styrofoam cups.  Color the insides of the bottom with a black permanent marker.  Trace the bottom of a cup to make the whites of the eyes. The whites of the eyes are made from white construction paper. Red lines and cornea were made with a red marker and the pupil with a black marker.  Make two 3 1/2” white circles, overlap them and then glue the eyes to those circles.  Now glue the eyes to the head.  The mouth is made with three red 10” strands of yarn.  The three strands were braided together and glue into  circle.  The mouth will be about 3” in diameter.

While all this is drying begin with the body.

Body:

Find a man’s size shoebox (12” X 9”), wrap it with the same green construction paper you used for the head.  Glue to box.    Cut two Ellison die cut t-shirts and trim to make one large t-shirt.  Glue it on the body.  In white crayon write Daddy’s Little  Monster.  With white construction paper draw a diaper to fit on the baby monster, cut and glue below the t-shirt.  The arms are made from balloons.  Blow them up and glue them behind the sleeves of the t-shirt.  Let it dry.

While all this is drying begin with the legs.

Legs:

Each leg is two styrofoam cups glued bottom to bottom.  Trace a circle from the bottom of the cup for each leg.  Use this to connect the two bottoms together. Let dry.  Then glue the legs to a 9 X 4 piece of paper.  You will glue the paper to the bottom of the monster.

Tip:  Hot glue does not work well with styrofoam!
