Snakey Sue
To make a snake-haired monster you will need two shoe boxes without the lids, glue, green, red, and yellow construction paper, a piece of black butcher paper and a piece of orange butcher paper, one section of newspaper, and any color yarn. We also used a little bit of scotch tape.
Make the body by stacking the two shoe boxes so they form the letter T. (One box stands on its end. The other box goes on top. The bottom box is vertical. The top box is horizontal) Glue won’t hold shoeboxes together, so poke holes and tie the boxes together with yarn. The teacher needs to poke the holes with pointy scissors. Glue a green piece of construction paper (12 by 9 inches) to the top box. Glue a yellow piece to the bottom box. Make red triangles for squinty eyes and glue them where eyes should go. The longest line on the triangles should be 3 inches. Make a red oval mouth 5 inches long. After you cut out the red oval, cut another smaller oval out of the middle so you just have skinny red oval lips. Glue this on the green paper where a mouth would go.
Make the arms and legs next. Roll up 6 single pages of newspaper and glue the edges to form 6 skinny tubes. Use a holepunch to make a hole in the top of each tube. Poke a hole in the each side of the body box and attach the arms with yarn and let them hang down. Connect two leg tubes with yarn to make legs that bend at the knees. Then attach the legs to the body box with yarn through a hole you poke in the bottom of the box.
The hair part is the most fun. Cut the black and orange butcher paper into strips the size of a 12 inch ruler. Trace the ruler, and cut out 10 orange strips and 10 black strips. You could have every student make one hair strip. It doesn’t have to be exactly 20. Twist the strip to form a snake. Cut a tiny strip of red for a snake tongue. (5millimeters by about 3 centimeters) Fold the tiny strip in half, dip the folded end in glue, and shove it into one end of the snake tube to make the forked tongue. Glue and tape the snake hair to the top of Snakey Sue. Mix up the orange and black hair, then fluff her hair and add some hair gel. Just kidding. Hair gel is not on the list.
Sit her in a chair and cross her legs. Have her watch the naughty kids to see if they are doing their work. Do not look directly into her eyes or you might turn to stone.
Classroom B: Holly Black (1) (Groesbeck, TX)
Head- Our monster’s name is Vangster and he was created in our Math class. On the top of his head is a hat made from a dinner size Styrofoam plate. The hat has a blue asterisk drawn on top. Under his hat is a piece of black butcher paper that covers the top of his head. His head is a large green balloon, with a short black piece of yarn used to make his unibrow. His large ears are two pieces of green construction paper that are round at the top and pointed at the bottom. His eyes are two white rectangles, with pencil colored oval shaped pupils. The mouth is another piece of black yarn, cut a little longer than the unibrow. Under the straight lined mouth are two upside down triangles that form his teeth. These are made from a small Styrofoam cup.
Body- The body of Vangster is a children’s size shoe box covered with two pieces of orange construction paper. Inside his body is piece of yarn tied to the bottom of the balloon head, there are several knots tied at the end of this yarn. Under the body is the half of an adult size shoe box, this creates his hips. The box is covered in dark blue butcher paper.
Arms- Right arm: His right shoulder is made from one small Styrofoam plate attached to his orange shoebox body. The right arm is 4 small Styrofoam cups connected with red yarn. His right arm is resting on his right hip.
Left arm: The left side of his body is not the same as his right side. Vangster only has one small Styrofoam shoulder on this side of his body.
Legs – Vangster’s legs are easy to make all you need is one large shoe box and cut it in half long ways. The two equal pieces of the box will need to be covered in light blue butcher paper. You will need to glue his legs to the bottom of his hips. His shoes are just as east to make; you need tow tops off of shoeboxes, and then cover each top with black butcher paper. The shoelaces for his shoes are red yarn in the shape of the number 8. The last step is to attach the feet to the bottom of his legs.
